Silly Putty can be used in a number of fun, and time-consuming ways (a real plus on a long car trip). Kids can stretch it, re-form it, mold it around other toys, use it to transfer print, etc.

Other comments or suggestions to consider:
It can stick to upholstery, so older kids would be the best ones to use it.
