Other suggestions or comments:
Playing family board games: "Life Stories" to get to know about each other, Dominos, Uno Attack, etc.
Kids are decorating a room with an alien theme where we have supplies so we can all make time capsules together. Suggested items to bring for this were included inside the party invitations.
Turning our garage into a ballroom with a disco ball, curtains and strings of lights. Lots of differnt kinds of dance music from big band to current hits so everyone can dance. Maybe Grandpa can teach us all how to ballroom dance - he used to be an instructor!
Making a large shiny/glittery paper mache ball filled with candy and small prizes (pokemon cards, movie passes, kazoos, etc.) to have our own "ball drop" from our roof top at midnight.
Complete the evening with each person sharing their resolutions.
