Age group(s) for this birthday party activity:
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School

Cost of birthday party activity:
Usual cost of food and cake. Minimal cost of party favors.

Birthday party planning information:
Who is the hero in your child's life? Firefighter, doctor, astronaut? Plan your party accordingly! Invite each guest to come dressed as their own favorite hero.
Food: Of course, hero sandwiches! Fill French bread rolls with meat and cheese; have lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, etc. available on the side. Don't forget the chips!
Cake: Make or buy a 9x13 cake and frost it white. Using decorating gel, draw various vehicles on top, such as a fire truck, police car, or space shuttle.
Favors: Check out the dime store for inexpensive profession kits - doctor, firefighter, etc. Divide among the kids.

Other suggestions or comments:
Activity: Organize an imaginative puppet show. Before the party, cut out pictures of different police officers, firefighters, astronauts, construction workers, train engineeers ... anyone doing a job. (That includes Moms!) You can also prepare pictures of rockets, police cars and other related objects. Let the kids attach the various pictures to dowels (popsicle sticks or sturdy straws also work). You can make a stage out of a large cardboard box beforehand, or just have the kids go behind a couch or big chair. Have a few kids at a time present their puppet show with the heroes they select. Set the mood with some upbeat music.
