Age group(s) for which this strategy is helpful:
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School
Middle School
High School & Beyond

Instructions for using this strategy:
"Reading Reflex" by Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness is a how-to book for parents. A common sense approach for teaching your child to read (as early as age 3; my three year old is decoding - not memorizing - more words than most average kindergartners). The book is designed for parents - no teacher lingo, just plain and simple "what to do." The authors are parents and educators. You can follow the plans in the book, or if your child doesn't work well with you, you can find a reading therapist in your area who is certified in the program. Go to www.ReadAmerica.net for more information on the research - the results are phenomenal! MidwestReadingClinic.com offers info. on reading therapy and at a very reasonable price (less than $30/hour).

What is the benefit to the child with reading problems?
Students diagnosed with reading related learning disabilities were included in the research. The program authors have had a 98% success rate of getting students to grade level in 12 clinical hours or less. The time committment for this is substantially lower than any other strategy available and the program is incredibly effective. Student can be decoding (as opposed to guessing, looking at pictures for clues, or memorizing) in 12 hours or less. Definitely worth every parent's time to read more about the program.
