Age group(s) for which this strategy is helpful: Elementary School Middle School
Instructions for using this strategy:
Buy a bunch of different colored 3x5 index cards. Write the words that your child can read on the cards. Use one card per word and one color for the type of word. For example, you or your child can write an action word (verb) such as "go" on a green index card. Use the color green for all verbs. Adjectives (describing words) would have another color and nouns (naming words) a third color. Stack the completed cards into a "word tower." Have your child practice reading the words from the index cards. As your child learns to read more words, the "word tower" will grow.
What is the benefit to the child with reading problems?
This strategy allows your child to practice reading what he can read well as opposed to struggling with what he can't do well. Also, it provides visual evidence of his reading abilities.
