Dissolve baking soda in warm water, and set aside.

Other suggestions and comments:
I like this recipe, 'cuz it makes several loaves at once, and when I do get motivated to make banana bread, I tend to Totally go for it. With the chocolate chips added, there's a better chance my children will eat the stuff after its first appearance on the table.

We made the loaves in late morning, pulled 'em out to cool, and returned more than four hours later. Chocolate chips seem to stay warm forever in such baked goods; slicing a loaf meant wiping chocolate off the knife blade, at intervals.
Not really a Major Problem, o' course! ;-) Gimme Chocolate, and nobody gets hurt... The other loaves will likely slice better tomorrow.

My kids don't like nuts, but because a gentleman at our church does like 'em, I tossed a handful of nuts into one loaf and stirred 'em in lightly, just prior to baking.

Try making little sandwiches with this bread, with softened cream cheese. Great for lunchbox, or tea parties!
