old looking clothing: pants, shirt (can be like a feed sack with holes)
2 different shoes
pot for head
black pencil for scruffy beard
bag containing seeds

Instructions:
Dress child with old looking clothing, perhaps a shirt underneath the feed sack for warmth.
Put 2 different shoes on the feet.
Place a pot on the head for a hat (one that fits).
Make a scruffy looking beard with a black or grey paint pencil.
Also, carry a small bag that looks like it has apple seeds (could use a large one, and add candy to it).

Other information to consider:
Johnny Appleseed was John Chapmen...he planted apple trees. He was very frugal; instead of spending money on hats and shoes, he made do with what he had, or what friends made for him. At the end of his life, he was seen wearing 2 different shoes. He wore a pot instead of a hat, because it was easier to carry that way.
