Charles E. Schaefer, Ph.D.

Description of method:
A method to teach bladder and bowel control to children as early as three months old. The goal is not to make children completely responsible for their elimination functions, but rather to condition them to eliminate urine and feces only when they feel the potty under their buttocks, and to signal their toileting needs to their care-givers by reaching for or grabbing for the potty. This is a method that was employed in the U.S. in the first half of the century. It requires a great deal of time and motivation of the parents to maintain the conditioning program. Because children do not gain voluntary bladder and bowel control until at least 18 months, this does not result in a completely trained child, only one who is conditioned. After the developmental milestone of voluntary control is reached, itĘs expected children will learn to hold back until they have signaled a need to be put on the potty.

Recommended age for this method:
Anywhere from three months up.

How long should it take for child to be potty trained by this method?
A month at the least, depending on when you start.
