Brief Summary:
Nine year-old Michael is Jewish, so when friend Elijah -- an African-American man in his eighties -- gives him a gift of an angel carved from wood, Michael worries over what it means. Reassured by his parents that the angel is a symbol of friendship and not a graven image, Michael decides to give Elijah the menorah he made in Hebrew school. The illustrations are inspired by the woodcarvings of the real Elijah Pierce, who lived from 1892 to 1984.
