Brief Summary:
The month of Ramadan, an Islamic time of fasting, feasting, sharing and prayer, occurs according to a lunar calendar, so it does not start at the same time every American year. In 2001, Ramadan falls around the same time as many western winter holidays. This story shows how young Hakeem celebrates Ramadan with his family each day, starting with the morning meal called Suhur, fasting through the day until after sundown, when the meal called Iftar is eaten. Many prayers are said throughout the day, and time is spent reading the holy book of Islam, called the Qu'ran. Hakeem is American, but celebrates Ramadan with other Muslims from all over the world. This is a good book for learning about Ramadan, but also to see how people who seem so different from each other have something special in common.
