Appropriate age group(s):
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School

High School & Beyond

Estimated time to make this gift:
about 10 minutes, once the ice is frozen

Materials:
large juice can, like Juicy Juice
water
hammer
nails
small candle

Instructions:
fill the can with water...let it freeze.
tape a design (a star, a tree, etc) to the side of the can.
Take a large nail and hammer it at intervals along the lines of your design (with spaces in between).
Let the ice melt.
Put a candle inside and put it out on Christmas Eve!

Other comments or suggestions to consider:
With young children you obviously have to be very careful with the nail and hammer, judging from each child what he or she can do and how much 1-1 help they need. My daughter has done this pretty much on her own since Kindergarten...it is quite simple and REALLY pretty!
