Family name origins & meanings

  • German (also Brück) : topographic name for someone who lived near a bridge, or an occupational name for a bridge keeper or toll collector on a bridge, from Middle High German bruck(e) ‘bridge’. Bruck remained the Bavarian and Austrian form, reflected in place names such as Innsbruck, whereas in central and northern Germany Brück(e) was the regular and ultimately standard form, as for example in the place name Osnabrück. Switzerland has both forms. See also Brueck.
  • Jewish (from Poland and Belarus) : from Polish, Belorussian, or Yiddish bruk ‘pavement’, possibly a metonymic occupational name for a paver.
