Family name origins & meanings

  • South German : from Middle High German aberëlle ‘April’; hence a nickname for a moody or temperamental man, with reference to the changeable weather in that month. In some cases it may have been applied to someone with a particular connection with April, for example as the month in which his annual tax or rent payments were due.
