By the fifth grade, kids have studied many different solids and shapes. They can probably tell you how many sides an octagon has, and how many faces a triangular prism has. (That's 8 and 5, respectively, by the way.) As they explore measurement even further this year, they'll learn about weight, mass, and temperature. They'll also discover that volume is more than just a dial on their radio. Your child may enjoy doing some experimenting in your kitchen. Just be forewarned: With fifth-graders, capacity experiments almost always involve overflow!
