Do you know how many cups there are in a pint without looking at a measuring cup or a cookbook? Third-graders love to measure real things because there's a real opportunity to make a mess! Encourage your child to explore. What difference can a few hundred grains of rice on the floor make, anyway? The emphasis here is on estimating and comparing, so if your child gets the idea that a gram is smaller than a kilogram and an ounce is smaller than a pound, you've done a great job. Third-graders are also introduced to probabilities and predictions. (There's a high probability that she'll be cleaning up all that rice after she's done measuring!)
