Stencil Painting

by Trish Kuffner, author of The Preschooler's Busy Book

Follow the directions to make stencils for your child to use in stencil painting.

  • Thin cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Tape
  • Sponge or brush
  • Tempera paint, liquid

  1. Draw a design, letter, or animal shape on thin cardboard.
  2. Cut out the inside of the shape to make the stencil, and tape the stencil onto a sheet of paper.
  3. Show your child how to dip a sponge or brush into liquid tempera paint, then fill in the inside of the stencil with color.
  4. When finished, remove the tape and lift off the stencil to see the design.
