New Tastes

New Tastes

Time

  • 5 to 10 minutes

Materials

  • Food toppings like grated cheese, yogurt, raisins, popcorn, salsa, or guacamole

Directions

Try broadening your finicky child's menu while aiding good choices by offering familiar toppings to new or less desirable foods. For example, your child might choose to sprinkle popcorn onto vegetable or pea soup or coconut onto squash.

Extensions

  • Let your child go through the refrigerator to find favorite toppings, being careful to remain nonjudgmental about any unusual combinations.
  • Let your child help with a shopping list of suitable toppings and some healthy (and maybe not so favorite) foods they can be served on. Remind your child that a topping can only be chosen if it goes on a healthy food.
  • Ask your child to make a simple snack for you, based on things that you like.
