String Along

Something as simple as grabbing for a toy can help to teach your baby how to control her environment.

Time

  • 5 to 10 minutes

Materials

  • Hand-sized objects
  • A piece of thick yarn 2 to 3 feet long

Directions

  1. Something as simple as grabbing for a toy helps to teach your baby how to control the environment. Tie the object or toy to one end of the piece of yarn and put the other end in your baby's hand.
  2. Demonstrate pulling to bring the item closer.

Extensions

  • Toss the toy out and help your baby to pull it back.
  • Make several yarn toys so your baby can choose which to pull.
  • Sing a song as you swing the toy back and forth toward or above your baby, just close enough that it can be reached.
  • When your baby can crawl, pull the toy slowly so it can be followed.
  • Use 2 objects and pull them in different directions so your baby can choose which one to follow.
