Tantrums at School

My son’s kindergarten teacher says that he throws tantrums at school. I have never seen him do anything like this at home, but she claims that when he is not getting along with a classmate he will begin yelling and crying. It’s difficult for me to discipline him for an act I have never witnessed. I don’t know how to handle this...

Hi JohnsMom, Although I can imagine that it might seem difficult to discipline for something you are not witnessing, you are going to have lots of that in the years to come with school. It is important that your son knows that he can't behave differently at school than he does at home and that you have the same expectations in both places. You have to support his teacher unless she gives you reason not to, at which point you should go to the principal. I think you could sit your son down and talk to him about what is happening at school and see if you can get to the bottom of what might be causing it. Also, you can discuss with him what the consequences will be at home when he gets a bad report from school. It is also good to make sure he knows that he will be rewarded when his behavior at school is great. Marti
