I am currently working in a day treatment program and taking graduate courses in Special Education. I have an assignment in which I am to interview various peaple about IEPs and IEP meetings. I am looking for answers from either parents or advocates of children in special education. If anyone would be willing to take a few minutes to answers these questions, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Please tell me a bit about yourself. How long have you been attending IEP meetings, what is your child's disability, grade level or age.

Briefly tell me in your own words what you think the purpose is of IEP meetings.

What is your role in IEP meetings?

What have you learned about the special education process through these meetings? What are your personal thoughts regarding them?

How beneficial do you feel IEP meeting are to you (1-10, 10 being very beneficial). Why?

How beneficial do you feel IEP meetings are to the student (1-10). Why?

How do you feel when you walk out of a meeting? What is the best part? What is the worst?

Didn't want this to get lost in the madness. Anybody have an idea?

Sorry, I'm in Britain so I don't think my imput would be much help.

We are pretty new to the process. Our son is turning 5 and hasn't been officially diagnosed yet. He was just tested, and is currently labeled Communication Impaired. So far the IEP process has been confusing, emotional, informative, and helpful. It has also been nerve-racking, especially since we don't have a diagnosis for our son yet. Fortunately, we have gotten all the services that our son deserves up to this point, but we are very cautious when making decisions for our son. We have learned a lot through this process, and have educated ourselves a great deal. If anything, we've become strong advocates for our son. My biggest problem is being able to trust the school district, so I question everything. I know that most often school districts are not looking out for the best interest of your child, and are instead looking to save money. So far, though exhausting, this process has taught us a lot, and we're greatful for the support our son has received. My heart goes out to all you parents that are going through this process too. It's a long haul, but it's worth the hard work and effort. I hope my input helps.

I'm a working mom with 2 sons. My eldest son was diagnosed ADHD in kindergarden and we've been going through the IEP process since then. He'll be going into 6th grade this fall. I've found the IEP process helpful in that it identifies what the goals for the school year are and I get quarterly reports on how he's doing with each of the goals. The IEP meetings are to review the year that is ending and establish the goals for the next school year. Here, I have an opportunity to express my concerns and identify what I think he needs more/less help in. Yes, I have learned about the special ed process in the meetings but also through regular contact with his regular teacher as well as the special ed teacher. I would give them a rating of 7. They are necessary for establishing the goals and making sure everyone is hearing the same thing. IEP meetings are helpful but contact with the teachers throughout the year is necessary to get a clearer understanding of how he's doing. I would feel great coming out of the meeting when I leave finding that my son doesn't need assistance anymore.

I work in Special Ed. as a 1:1 Aide and I have a child with an IEP. I could give you input on several levels. You ask for a lot of info all at once and I'm not sure how to answer you. What state are you in? I am in CA.
