High School Daughter Wants To Study In Japan Next Year

My daughter wants to go to Japan next year for her Junior year of High School. She will be 16 at that time.

She's looking into a couple "programs", the one I'm familiar with is AFS.

Anyone out there have any experience with this that they can share? I'm concerned that if my only input is from the "program" itself that I may not get a complete picture of how these things go.

I'm all for her expanding her horizons and experiencing other cultures, but I want to make sure it's a positive experience. She speaks very little Japanese, but promises that she'll learn a lot more before she goes.

Any help/insight will be appreciated.

One of my daughters went to Germany for a month. She had a great experience. However, you can not "make sure" it is positive. That's one of the crappy things about being a parent.

My best friend taught in Japan for about 2 yrs. after finishing college. Now she's in Spain. She started her own business teaching English to foreign students. She loves it, and doesn't regret her decision at all. My advice wld be to get as much info as you can about the program your daughter wants to participate in before she goes. Ask a lot of questions. Make sure you and your daughter are comfortable w/ the whole idea before she commits to it. It sounds like a wonderful educational experience.

Acitez - I understand. Perhaps I should have instead written, "do all I can to hopefully avoid a bad experience". ;) Concerned - My daughter is thinking about the possibility of pursuing a career over there; Unfortunately, she would be comfortable with a one-way ticket to Tokyo and a little spending money. ;( So it's going to be the parents who decide what they're comfortable with. Thanks, Mike
