Sleep trouble

Hi there,

Just joined this site so I am unsure of how it works and how to find out when someone has replied to me but I guess I will find out.

I have 3 children all under 4 yrs of age and am having problems with my 1 yr old son who wakes every 2 to 3 hrs during the night and will only settle on the breast. I am trying to stop breastfeeding and he is fine during the day without it and will go to sleep with a bottle but when he wakes during the night he won't take a bottle, screams while I rock him, won't take a dummy. I have tried to let him cry for a while but he just gets louder the longer I leave him and one of my other sons is a light sleeper and wakes easily and is a monster to get back to sleep so I can't let him cry. I am at my wits end and don't know what else to try. I have wrapped him up tightly as well but it doesn't work. Any suggestions for me?

Hey mum of 3,

Welcome to the boards.  Hopefully, some other parents will have some ideas for you.

My only suggestion is that you not continue to give him the breast at night---I think that he is probably waking up for that and if you can get him use to not having it when he wakes up that he will stop waking up for it.  When my daughter was still on the bottle she would wake up for it and her doctor said to start giving her just water because she didn't need it for calories or nutrition and that she was just waking up for it.  You could also call your son's doctor and see if they have any suggestions for you.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Marti

My ds is also 1 year old and I have exactly the same problem with him. I do give in at night and breastfeed him because I am just so tired. This is probably the only downside to breastfeeding... but it's a big one!

Hey all,
I have a 16 month old that likes to wake up in the middle of the night and come to bed with me and my husband.  I am trying to break this habit, I know I started this but I can't seem to nip it in the bud.  I have tried to let him cry himself to sleep and it worked for like 20 minutes after an hour of crying.  Then he just kept crying, stopping for 20 min., then crying again.  HELP!!!!!!  What do I do?
