Baby with bottle at night
01/07/2008 at 18:42 PM

I have made the mistake of giving my baby a bottle at night to help her fall asleep.  She is 10 months old and still wont sleep through the night.  Any ideas on how to stop the bottle with success and manage to get some sleep?

I wouldn't be beating myself up over the bottle. I had one that was up a couple of times a night til I don't know how old he was. I asked the pediatrician for advice at the 18 mo checkup. The pediatrician's 3 year old wasn't sleeping through the night. Mine is 16 now. All of us are sleeping fine. Seriously, I would try the let him/her cry thing, I know there is a book or something about teaching sleep independence. I remember it had good ideas, but I don't remember what they were, I was reading it as a grandma. We forget things sometimes8)

I would wholeheartedly agree with putting some cooled boiled water in her bottle instead of milk, but please don't put juice in a bottle.  Not a good idea

After many mos of sleep deprivation, I gave in, too, and put water in my son's bottle. It sounds mean, but it worked for us. He wasn't happy about it at first, but he finally realized in a matter of days, that that's all he was going to get. Another idea my mother-in-law told me was to put a little cereal in the bottle to get my son to sleep through the night. I personally never did this b/c the pediatrician told me it cld be a choking hazard, but I know many people who've done it, and it worked for them. Both my son's were off the bottle and drinking from a sippy cup by a yr old. Every child is different, but ck w/ your child's pediatrician for recommendations on when to stop the bottle altogether. Good luck!
