Breastfeeding and the Law

A Massachusetts law will go into effect in April 2009 allowing a mother to bring a civil suit against any “person or entity” who harasses or penalizes a mother breastfeeding in public. Do you think the law should even be involved in this issue at all? How do you feel about women breastfeeding in public?

Personally speaking, I don't see breastfeeding as an issue at all. And no, I don't think the law shld be involved. Breastfeeding is a natural thing. It's not like smoking which poses a serious health risk. I think some people just have to have something to complain about. If breastfeeding is offensive to anyone, that person can leave the room. Many times, though, I've witnessed moms move to a private location to breastfeed. That's what I used to do. Either way, it's never bothered me, and I don't see why it's such a big deal.

Personally I wish we lived in a society that would not make an issue out of something so natural. I have witnessed women breastfeeding in public, and it is always discreet. The problem is not breastfeeding; the problem is in the minds of those who see it as being somehow perverse.

Hey, we have many laws that prohibit discrimination. If a mother is being harassed for feeding her child then I don’t see anything wrong with her having the ability to take legal action. I think having a law against harassing a breastfeeding mother would discourage those ignorant people who do such a thing. What bothers me is, the same people who find a perfectly natural act offensive are, many times, the same individuals who go to "innocent" movies like Wedding Crashers and watch boobies over and over with delight. People just love to judge others and like to believe they are superior. If you are offended by a breastfeeding mother then look away. I look away when my neighbors dog is taking a crap, it's kinda offensive, but I realize it's natural and necessary.

I think it's ridiculous there needs to be a law. It shouldn't even be and issue. So many people look at breasts as sexual objects. They are there to feed a child. So it would be like saying we shouldn't have restaurants because you can see other people eating. Breastfeeding is not any different. People shouldn't be so worried about what others are doing if it isn't causing harm to anyone. I believe there are a lot of people out there that need to have more of an open mind about things. It's getting crazy.
