Hey, let's start a movement?

A gentleman of my acquaintance challenged me to clean up my language. I don't cuss much, but "pissed off" has crept into my speach. I am going to make an effort to change that to "ticked off," "annoyed," or "irritated," and change "really pissed off" to "angry."

Anybody else have vulgarisms that could use some refinement?

looks like the filter at this site agrees with my gentleman friend!

Since I work with children all day, I seldom curse and never while writing. My rule is if you can't read it to your children, don't write it.

I think most people have gotten lazy about their language as it has become more and more acceptable in mixed company. I could clean up my act a little bit and I think that would be a really good thing for me to try to do!! Marti http://www.familyeducation.com/home/

I work with children too and my carefulness extends to my private life.

Good for both of you! I don't remember when I got casual about this. It just crept up on me.

Sometimes I say things like, "that's so stupid" or "Oh my God", among other things. I try not to say such things in front of my kids, but when you've been saying these things for yrs, it's hard to change. I know I'm capable of being more cautious when I speak, as I used to work for a publishing co. where I definitely put more thought and effort into my words and my writing. You're right, though. Sometimes the words just come out, especially if you're not in a professional environment and getting paid for the way you present yourself. I think we should be aware of how we speak in casual settings as well b/c it does have a reflection on who we are, but I also believe we shldn't be so rigid about it either. There's a time to relax and be yourself too. When I'm out w/ friends, sometimes that tough NY sounding voice comes out, but that's just me being me. There's a time and a place for everything. Some people, my husband for example, are very strong-willed. He feels that he shldn't change for anything. If people don't want to accept him for who he is, then so be it. I'm a bit more open-minded than that, but he does have a pt.
