Three Billy Goats Gruff is a good one, and Johnny Appleseed is good, and based on a true story. Little Red Riding Hood, Three Bears, Three Little Pigs, Cinderella, Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill.

The Caldecott Medal has been awarded to books since about 1930 to recognize excellent illustration, the Newbery award is around that old too, and is for excellent Children's Literature.

If you can find The Large and Growly Bear, which is a Little Golden Book, (that's the publisher), it is my favorite children's book of ALL TIME. Little Golden Books are quite commercial now--a Disney subsidiary, but the older ones are better.

Dr. Suess books provide common experience for children, almost every child in the US interacts with Dr. Suess. They are better for emerging readers, 4-7 years old.

My son-in-law makes up stories for bed-time. I think that is a great idea. I also don't think it matters too much what you read to the children, as long as you follow the text with your finger, pointing to the words as you read. Your finger must skim along quickly to keep up with your reading.
