Daughter wants a pen pal

My daughter wants a pen pal from England. She is almost 9 and going into fourth grade. Any ideas of how to find a safe and real pen pal?

Perhaps you could write to an elementary school in England and ask if anyone was interested, but you may not be able to do that until school started back up.

I live in Ohio (USA) I have a 9 year old daughter that is going in to the 5th grade. (She will be 10 the December) She would love to have a pen pal. We school at home through a online school, and have just move so she has few friends that live close by.

If you would like you can e-mail me and we could set something up. homeschool_girlscouts@yahoo.com

I was interested in your post.  My husband is British and our daughter was born there and attended school from pre-school through first grade before we moved back to the States.  I thought of some things you may want to be aware of before you start your daughter up as a pen friend with a British child.

1. British children generally start school (Kindergarten) at age 4.5 years.  This is required by law.  Therefore, most British children are a year ahead of their American counterparts of the same age.  Your daughter is 9 entering fourth grade - my daughter is 9 entering 5th grade.

2. British school is divided into Primary and Secondary school.  There is no middle or junior high school.  By year 5 or 6, most British children are preparing to take exams that will determine their place in a comprehensive or grammar school, equivalent to our high schools.  They will likely be able to finish school by age 16 or 17, although they will not be allowed to drive until age 17 or vote until age 18.  In secondary school these children "major" in three or four subjects for their A level and O level exams which will determine their opportunities for a place at a university or college.  They do not take the universal approach to education that is more consistent in the USA.

3. British schools start up in mid-September and end in mid-July.  They have several very long breaks, including week-long half-term breaks and 3-4 weeks off at Christmas or Easter.  Because of this, most British children travel around Europe during breaks and are much more seasoned travelers than most US kids.

If you find you cannot locate a pen friend (the term in the UK) for your daughter, please let me know, as I can put you in touch with a number of primary schools in the Surrey area where we lived.  I can also put you in touch with a church group which has both ex-pat (Americans on jobs in the UK) and British members and have children at regular British schools and at the American School of Surrey.  I am sure there would be many who would be interested in having a US pen pal.

Hi Debbie. My daughter is 9 yrs. as well. We live in New Jersey, not far from New York City. She always had friends a few years older than she, as she was ahead in many ways. Lately though, these girls have entered middle school, and it is not "cool" to hang around with a little girl. I think my daughter feels really abandoned, and a penpal would be a way to connect in a healthy way. If interested, write me back, thanks. Cheryl Horgan... steinfeld5@aol.com
