My son has several "disorders"

My 5 year old son has been diagnosed with several disorders in the past 13 months.  Although the problems have been noticeable for years now, I just recently found doctors and other professionals to help me.  My son has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Stereotypical Movement Disorder, ADHD, and some other physical problems that tie into the previous conditions,  So, what is my question?  Well, I read and read and read some more, but really, I have trouble (though I am learning) recognizing what is what and when do they overlap, because many times they seem to mimic one another and I was wondering, is there anyone else who can tell me more, or if they are in the same boat.

Hey Patiencemom,

Welcome to the boards.  I have not personally experienced this but I would talk to a doctor who is an expert in this field to try and get some guidance on how to deal with all the problems.

Also, I am sure there are some parents on here who can give you some advice--anyone have any good ideas or information?

First, I'd like to suggest that you have them hold off on medications for now, especially Ritalin. I've taken this stuff as an adult and all it does is drug you up, not make you better. Second, I don't know what your son's communication level is at, but as a sign language student I've met parents learning sign so they can communicate with their kids, and their kids learning the same language. Just a thought. I mentioned this because these parents have kids or family with Asperger's Good luck! :)
