Spider Costume

Follow these simple directions to create a Spider costume.

Spider Costume

Time: 1 to 2 hours

Effort: Easy - some sewing required

Materials:

  • Black leotard and matching tights, or sweatpants and blackturtle neck
  • Black shoes
  • Two pairs of additional tights
  • Polyfil stuffing
  • Black thread and needle
  • Scissors
  • Black yarn or clear fishing line
  • Double-sided tape
  • Contrasting felt or reflective cut-outs
  • Flexible plastic-coated wire, or pipe cleaners
  • Face paint
  • Fangs (optional)

Instructions: The person's arms and legs make four of the spider's eight legs. To make the other four, cut off the tops of the two additional pairs of tights and stuff the legs with Polyfil. Put the wire or pipe cleaners inside the legs to stiffen them. Baste the legs to the back of the bodysuit. To make legs all move together, attach black yarn or clear fishing line to the ends of each leg and to the wrists of the leotard. Cut the spider's markings out of contrasting felt. Use double-sided tape (or needle and thread) to attach these markings. Paint the face white and lips black. Then draw black lines all over face to look like a web. Top it off with the fake fangs!

Other Details: Using light-colored or reflective material for the markings will increase your visibility while trick-or-treating.
