Tuesday’s Tip: Simple Kitchen Lessons

Jessica, aka the Sweet Pea Chef, is a former U.S. Senate staffer/weekend gourmet turned full-time mom/family gourmet. She lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband and two sons.

It never ceases to amaze me how many learning opportunities arise during my every day life in the kitchen.  Actually, there are great life and learning lessons almost everywhere, something one of my boy’s teachers calls “authentic learning.”   Especially when the boys are on break from school, like they both are this week, I try and find ways to incorporate learning into our typical routine.

So it was with a smile on my face that G started rummaging through the fruit bowl on our kitchen counter and started taking trips back and forth across the kitchen to the island where he was sitting.  I was busy prepping a meal, so I didn’t see what he was doing until he called, “mommy, look--an ‘E’!”



Sure enough, G had quite handily created an uppercase “E” with our clementines.  He was so proud and I was proud of his independent creation.

And so it continued through much of the alphabet while I cooked, G created.

Clementines are such a popular and tasty fruit to have on hand this time of year, and their small size and the fact that they usually are sold in large quantities make it perfect for small hands to create letters, shapes or other creations.

For this week’s Tuesday’s Tip:  grab a bag of clementines and help your own family’s little hands create and learn!
