I am on a bad streak in the kitchen, one I hope will soon falter. It all started about 3 weeks ago, and I am ready for this streak to end. Today. Like most parents, I seldom do anything uninterrupted when my boys are present. Except for the quiet right before bed, when I read the boys a story or say their bedtime prayers, I am in constant multi-tasking mode. Multi-tasking in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing, but when you add a hot stove and sharp knives, it can be brutal. I have had my share of kitchen mishaps and mistakes, but I seem to be on a streak right now, and the worst thing is, it is right at the point when I am trying to teach R and G about kitchen safety. I think I need to have SPH teach them about kitchen safety because right now I am the example of what *not* to do in the kitchen. First, about 3 weeks ago, I was not being careful enough while I was slicing some food with a really sharp knife. G walked into the kitchen and I was paying attention to what he was saying and I sliced the heck out of middle finger. The wound was so deep I seriously thought to myself, “ugh, I don’t want stitches!!” But a good butterfly bandage and a week later, my finger was pretty much healed. But let’s just say that I have an even more unique fingerprint as I have a big scar right on my finger pad, one that is quite distinct. Then, not too long ago, I reached into get a pan from the oven with a mere thin towel cover my hand. The towel slipped and I got a great big burn on my hand. I can’t even count the number of times I have said, “be careful!” or “hot!” or (when the boys were new toddlers) “danger!” Apparently I forgot all these lessons I’ve tried so hard to impart on R and G and have another hand scar to prove it. Finally, last night I was preparing some dinner and trying to do too much, too fast. I will spare you the details, but I have another wound on my left index finger which, incidentally, is making typing a real adventure too. So, I need to do a whole lotta less “do as I say, not as I do,” and begin to “walk the walk” with kitchen safety. Otherwise, I may not have a healthy, unscarred finger left with which to cook! SPC
