It's a Scorcher Today!

I don't know about where you live, but it is H-O-T here. There is actually a heat advisory for pretty much the rest of the week, telling people to stay indoors and out of the sun as much as possible.

I've always like the summer heat-- which is funny to say, since living in New England, we have very short summers and very (very!) long winters.

But, this kind of heat can be a little unbearable. I went outside today on my lunch break and the minute I stepped outside, it felt like someone was smothering me with a hot, wet blanket. Needless to say, my lunch time walk quickly turned into an excursion to Crate and Barrel. (Actually, any excuse for me to go to Crate and Barrel is excuse enough for me!)

Anyway, in temperatures like this, it's important to take any instructions seriously. In addition to what your local news person might be telling you to do, here are some more helpful resources to stay safe in this scorching summer heat:

Read up on how to recognize, treat, and prevent heat-related illnesses, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Find out what sunscreen guidelines you need to follow if you and your family will be spending time outdoors in the sun.

In addition, find out what brands of sunscreen are safest for your child, and what to look for on the label according to the FDA.

If you are heading to the beach, make sure to print off this beach bag essentials checklist to make sure you have all you need to stay safe (and have fun) in the sun.

Find out what the CDC recommends you do on extremely hot days, and how to stay healthy during a heat wave.

Finally, find any more information you might need to know about keeping your family safe in the sun.

The summer is the best time of year (in my opinion), but it is very important to be smart and safe when it comes to hot weather. Remember to listen to the experts, drink lots of water, and stay inside in the air conditioning if need be.

On that note, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! What are your plans this weekend? Are you heading to the beach, or hunkering down in the comfort of your own, air-conditioned house?
