My 2 Favorite Thanksgiving Books!

November 19,2010
Growing up in Canada I celebrated Thanksgiving ( although in early October and without pilgrims) but it's simply not as big a deal as it is in the United States. I love holidays and as soon as I moved to the States I started baking pies, decorating with corn and soon found 2 books I love about the holiday . A Plump And Perky Turkey by Teresa Bateman makes me laugh hysterically every year. Maybe I just have a juvenile sense of humor but it really does make me laugh out loud no matter how many times I read it , and I have read it often. The story is about a town that needs a turkey to roast for Thanksgiving and go top hilarious lengths to get one. The turkey wins in the end and so do the readers. I have yet to meet a child who hasn't laughed while being read this story. The First Thanksgiving Day : A Counting Story by Laura Krauss Melmed is a wonderful book for the holiday. Not only does it illustrate how both pilgrim and native American children worked to prepare for the first feast it captivates you with Mark Beuhner's fantastic illustrations. The counting element will keep your kids busy on every page there are animals corresponding to the number as well as the hidden turkey on every single one. The story is historical, the counting is educational and the illustrations are magical.
