  • Spanish, Galician, and Italian : ethnic name from vasco ‘Basque’, denoting someone from the Basque region, or from a Spanish byname or Italian personal name of the same derivation. The inhabitants of this region, which extends between southern France and northern Spain, are first recorded in Latin sources as the Vascones, a word of unknown origin. See also Gascoigne.
