Family name origins & meanings

  • English : of uncertain origin; perhaps a habitational name of Norman origin from some minor place in France called La Souche, from Old French s(o)uche ‘tree stump’.
  • Polish, Czech, Slovak, and German (of Slavic origin) : from Polish suchy, Czech and Slovak suchý ‘dry’ (perhaps a topographic name) or, when applied to people, ‘thin’.
