  • Irish : reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Longáin ‘descendant of Longán’, a personal name probably derived from long ‘tall’, or perhaps from the homonymous long ‘ship’ (and so originally a byname for a seafarer). Sometimes Leonard is used as an equivalent.
