Family name origins & meanings

  • Japanese : ‘wide rice paddy’; the name of an immigrant family from Paekche, an ancient Korean kingdom (15 bc–ad 663) with many close Japanese ties; also other families descended more recently from the Sasaki and Watarai clans. The name is mostly found in west-central Japan and the Ryūkyū Islands, and is listed in the Shinsen shōjiroku.
