NHTSA's
LIST OF AUTO
RECALLS
November 1, 1999
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a list
of auto safety recalls announced in August and urged consumers to have
the problems fixed promptly.
The list identifies the make and model of the vehicle or equipment involved,
with a brief description of the safety problem.
NHTSA said it is publicizing the recalls to alert consumers about safety
problems and encourages them to take action. Under federal law, safety
problems must be remedied without cost to consumers. Currently, 72 percent
of the owners of vehicles with safety problems have the recall work performed.
NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all
purchasers, owners and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with
Federal safety standards is found. The agency urges owners to wait until
they receive notification from the manufacturer before contacting their
dealers to schedule the repair work. Not all vehicles of a particular make
and model may be subject to the recall.
Consumers can get up-to-the-minute information on safety recall campaigns,
or information on the recall history of a particular make and model of
car, truck, motorcycle, or child safety seat, by calling the agency's toll-free
Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236). The Hotline also
can be used to report safety problems.

SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGNS: AUGUST 1999
VEHICLES:
CARS, VANS, LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS AND MOTORCYCLES
American Honda Motor Company
Models:
Acura 3.5RL Years: 1996-1999
Acura 3.2TL Years: 1996-1998
Number Involved: 96,617
Dates of Manufacture: December 1995 - April 1998
Defect: A transmission case bolt can loosen and
fall out allowing the transmission to disengage from the differential.
The vehicle could lose power to the drive wheels without warning. Also,
shifting the transmission into the Park position would not lock the wheels,
and a parked vehicle could move unexpectedly if the parking brake is not
set.
Remedy: Dealers will install a redesigned bolt. Owner
notification began Aug. 30, 1999. Owners who do not receive the free remedy
within a reasonable time should contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009.

Dates of Manufacture: July 1990 - February 1994
Defect: On certain 2-door vehicles, one of the bolts
that attaches the recliner mechanism to the driver's seat back could break.
This could result in the seat back suddenly reclining and causing a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the driver seat lower seat
back recliner mechanism attaching bolt. Owner notification began Aug. 23,
1999. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time
should contact Chrysler at 1-800-992-1997.

DaimlerChrysler
Models: Dodge Ram Years: 1994-1995
Number Involved: 64,000
Dates of Manufacture: July 1993 - June 1995
Defect: On certain 2500 and 3500 series 4x4 regular
cab pickup trucks produced before March 21, 1995; 2500 and 3500 series
4x4 club cab pickup trucks produced before June 8, 1995; and 3500 series
4x2/4x4 chassis cab trucks produced before June 21, 1995, the front suspension
spring/shock towers can crack and eventually separate from the vehicle
frame. The shock tower could damage the rear wheel brake lines resulting
in loss of rear brake system pressure. This would create the potential
for increased stopping distances.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the spring/shock tower and
any vehicles exhibiting cracking will have the tower replaced. Vehicles
that do not show any cracking will have a weld-on reinforcement added.
DaimlerChrysler has not scheduled owner notification pending proof testing
of the reinforcement. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within
a reasonable time should contact Chrysler at 1-800-992-1997.

the engine cradle. If this occurs, the transmission half-shaft could pull
out of the transaxle resulting in a loss of power.
Remedy: Dealers will reinforce the engine cradle at the
point where the lower control arm attaches to it. Owner notification is
expected to begin during October 1999. Owners who do not receive the free

Chevrolet Sonoma Year: 2000
GMC Jimmy Year: 2000

Dates of Manufacture: March - July 1999
Noncompliance: On certain pickup truck and sport utility
vehicles equipped with 2-wheel drive, the right-hand antilock brake system
(ABS) module feed pipe and/or brake crossover pipe tube nuts could have
been tightened without seating the pipe-flared-ends enough to withstand
normal assembly and vehicle inputs without partially unseating. If this
occurred, the seal could have been broken during vehicle assembly, or brake
fluid cycling, and a leak could occur, increasing the brake stopping distance.
If so, the vehicle would not comply with requirements of FMVSS No. 105,
"Hydraulic and Electrical Brake Systems."
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the brake pipe union for
signs of brake fluid and, if necessary, install a new brake pipe union.
