Can Dismissing an Award-Winning Teacher Be Good for the Students?
Carleton Kendrick Ed.M., LCSW

Education First

Is undergoing a sex change grounds for dismissing a teacher? If high school teacher David Warfield gets fired because she is returning to teach as Ms. Dana Rivers, both she and her students have been cheated.

Ms. Rivers, a nine-year, award-winning teacher, will lose the opportunity to do what she does so well -- inspire and motivate students. Ms. Rivers is the "Stand and Deliver" award winner, given to the school's most inspirational teacher.

If we were lucky, we would have had a teacher like Ms. Rivers. Someone who wouldn't let us give up on ourselves. Someone who believed teaching was a calling, not a job. Don't these kids deserve Ms. Rivers? Two hundred fellow teachers and many students staged a recent lunchtime rally across from the high school, asking the school board to reinstate Ms. Rivers. One student's placard read simply, "Education First!" I couldn't agree more.

Should the school board have let the teacher go?
