1. How Can I Help My Gifted Child?
Dee Cee - 01:59pm Oct 21, 1999 EST (139.)

Advice To Parents of Gifted Minors

To all of you blessed with gifted children:

Try being part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Don't blame schools for what you are responsible for. Try living in the real world. Teach your children what they need to do to survive in it. Stop whining and do something constructive and realistic. Don't involve your child in your battles. There are lowsy teachers and and lowsy parents. Don't waste your energy being anti-productive. Who are you really doing this for? Remember, academics are only a small part of a child's education. Your gifted child deserves to have a childhood. How can a brilliant child be bored? It's a contradiction of terms.

2. Homeschooling Debate
dorik - 02:54pm Oct 21, 1999 EST (330.)

I have been homeschooling my children since 1988. It does not hurt public education; I believe the two are exclusive of each other. Homeschooling is a wonderful alternative for parents who want to take charge of their children's education.

Community Resource Officer

Your school can get support from your local police dept. to have an officer there on the premises. For the kids to know he is there and has an open door policy where they can communicate in private makes a difference. He is also available to teachers as well as parents and anyone in the community. A helpful resource available from the US dept of Ed. is called Protecting Students from Harassment & Hate Crimes:A Guide for Schools,January,1999. This can be ordered by calling 1-877-4ed-pubs or e-mail www.ed.gov/pubs/edpubs.html (product ID#EC 0060P)

4. Stressed Out?!?

Stay at home moms work harder than most people realize!

Being a stay at home mom is one of the hardest jobs I can think of.Before I became a mother, I worked long hours, but I was never as tired as I am now. I have two wonderful kids, but I really don't have any time for myself when they are home. It's also hard when you could use the extra money that a job would provide to buy the little things that kids always seem to want whenever we go shopping. It's hard when there's only one income. Some days it seems like I'm the only crazy person staying home with my kids. Most women I know are working.I love my kids very much, and I am not comfortable leaving them with a sitter all day long.I am waiting until my youngest child is in school full time to go back to work.

5. Getting Along With "Bad" Teachers
Teacher128 - 06:43pm Oct 22, 1999 EST (23.1)

What your teacher is doing is rewarding attendance (which you should be doing anyway!) because funding for schools is tied to student attendance. There is nothing illegal about this because you, too, have the opportunity to be present on a daily basis! If, for whatever reason, you choose to absent yourself from class, why should you be entitled to the same "perks" as students who choose to attend daily? (And don't give me that garbage about "excused absences!" How often have your parents or your teacher gone to work when they would have rather done something else or been somewhere else? How often have you dragged yourself to the mall or to a movie or to a concert when you didn't feel in peak condition?!) Quit whining and get your priorities in order! Your job is school! Do it without complaining!

6. LD & Reading Problems...
Edward Schroeder - 03:05pm Oct 22, 1999 EST (52.)

Monkey See, Monkey Does

My 3-1/2 yr. old grandson does not speak well. When he hears a question or a statement, he simply repeats the last one or two words. He does act on the statement but repeats as I said. He does not know any colors except Blue. He has good motor coordination. I believe that he is right hand dominant. He is happy, sleeps and eats well. He loves to hear me TELL a story but has no patience when I attempt to read him one or look at the pictures. He was tested by an audiologist and we were told that he hears ok but has a low attention span. Any ideas?

I have a first grader and I am frustrated because I don't know if he is learning what he needs to in order to move to the next grade, and continue on with a good foundation for the future. I would like some direction that would tell me something such as, when your child finishes first grade if he can do 89 he is below average, or if he can do YYYYY he is average or if he can do ZZZZ he is above average. My question is how do I find out what the X Y and Z's are?

8. Reading :-) vs :-(
Angela doCanto - 01:08pm Oct 22, 1999 EST (387.)

I have to read at least 3-5 of her favorite books (a few of the 20)that we get from the library EVERY NITE.

Unfortunately, my mother did not have the command of the English language when I was a child to read to me, but we did go the the library (which was down the street).

As a child, I loved Charllotes Web and the Richard Scarry books. I was also fond of the Wild Things books altho I did not remember the the name of the books until about the age of 30!

Parents need to read to their children every night, make it a routine, MAKE THE TIME. Believe me there are times when I am not "in the mood" some nights, but I remember that she is accustomed to it and she needs structure and guidance and the cute "I'm not your friend" look usully makes me feel guilty. Soooooo, I read.

9. Halloween Tricks & Treats

Trick or Treating kicked to the curb

I love the concept of Halloween, the last fun holiday of the year before Christmas. I love Trick or Treating, I went up until about 5 years ago. I'm now 20 and I honestly have to say that I don't trust a lot of people out there. Halloween should not be dismantled but I do believe that Trick or Treating should. It unnerves me that you would send a child to a strangers house and tell them to beg for candy, after years of telling them not to talk to or take candy from strangers. I think Halloween is great though and there should be a big neighborhood Halloween party where all the neighbors can bring candy and feel safe that their children are there. But I say kick the trick or treating to the curb.

Speaking as a high school student in my junior year, i can tell you that no matter how many times you tell your kids "don't have sex" most will still do it. There are so many diseases and possible problems out there that kids just don't even know about! we need to be informed so we'll at least know what we're getting ourselves into. There's no sense in turning a blind eye to statistics that just aren't "improving." we're not adults and, much as we might hate to admit it, we don't know everything. we could use the help and knowledge of our elders on this one.
