Safety on Your Website

Don't let your family's personal website turn your child into a target for online predators. Follow these tips to keep your child safe:

  • Don't publish your child's personal identification information. Make sure your website doesn't list her full name, address, or telephone number.

  • Don't turn your site into a family photo album. Photos of your child shouldn't appear on a website that can be accessed by the general public. If you'd like to put pictures of your family online, you can put them on a site that limits access so that only family members and friends will be able to access it. You can find sites that offer these options all over the Web.

  • Don't let your child chat without a screen name. If you host message boards or chat rooms on your website, be sure to set up a screen name to shield the identity of your child. Discourage your child from using her real name if she's chatting on public sites.
