Searching is Academic

At Peterson's Education Center, your family has a variety of search options. If you're looking for information on a specific school, you'll want the alphabetical or geographic searches. But if your child knows what he or she wants to major in, check out one of the searches based on majors and degrees.

What I found

I chose the following criteria:

  1. 2-year
  2. Associate degree
  3. Culinary arts

I got a list of 146 colleges. Since I have relatives in Chicago, I clicked on Ivy Tech State College -- Northwest. Here's the information I received:

  • Quick Overview: Located in Gary, Indiana. State-supported, on a 13-acre urban campus with easy access to Chicago. Accreditation: regional. Enrollment Profile: 100 percent state residents, 10 percent transferred in, 59 percent 25 or older, 59 percent women, 30 percent African American, 1 percent Native American, 9 percent Hispanic, 1 percent Asian American.

Most of the overviews provide basic information, but some -- like Pasadena's California Institute of Technology, have extensive descriptive material, online viewbooks, and Instant Inquiry, a neat feature that lets your child request admissions material by filling out an online form that gets emailed to the school's admissions department.

Peterson's also lets your family search by any religious affiliation .

Before you leave, take a quick break from your research and challenge yourself by taking one of Peterson's college contests.
